3100. PROJECT: LARGE HOLLOW FORMS.pdf

HOLLOW FORMS, or blind-turned forms as they are sometimes known, have built into the making of them a handicap: the turner cannot see what the chisel is doing when hollowing out the inside. The cutting proceeds by gosh and by golly, by the sound of the chisel as it cuts, and with the aid of various measuring instruments. With large hollow forms, the problem is compounded by the fact that the chisel must protrude over the tool rest so far that control of the cutting edge becomes a factor limiting, for most of us, the size of the piece we are able to attempt. This article shows a way around that by somewhat redefining the meaning of what a hollow form is and by taking a different approach. IN THIS ARTICLE I will teach you all the necessary procedures in making large hollow forms out of a single piece of wood using a simplified technique that will greatly reduce the problems of chisel overhang and allow you to make far more easily larger hollow forms than you ever thought possible on your lathe.

* The greatest shortfall of magazines and books is the limited space they are able to devote to an article due to the cost of publication. The article must by necessity be compressed, as is the information provided. This is not a limiting factor with the internet.
