0100. BEADING DELIGHT.pdf
Turned beads can be used to stand alone as an accent on a form. They can be used as one element among others in spindles to give a desired design. Beads are also excellent at separating one design element from another thereby acting as aids in the transition from one area of a bowl, or large platter, to another. IN THIS ARTICLE, I will teach you: how to modify the grind on a spindle gouge; how to use that gouge in an unorthodox manner; how to manipulate the beading gouge to best effect; how to best place a bead on a surface; and how to sand the beads you create.

0200. BOWL DEPTH DELIGHT.pdf
A problem posed by every bowl is: how do you simply and accurately measure the thickness of the bottom of a bowl to the nearest sixteenth of an inch without the use of calipers of any kind? The last thing I want to do is go too deep when I am excavating the inside of a form thereby ruining the piece and wasting all the time I have already put into it to say nothing of the frustration, disappointment, and lost income such a move would cause. On the other hand, I cannot take to the gallery a piece with a thick, clumsy, heavy bottom resulting from being too cautious. IN THIS ARTICLE, I will show you how you can take ALL the guess work out of determining the precise thickness of the bottom of any bowl-like form without using calipers or purchasing any new tools. It's fast. It's deadly accurate.

0300. BOWL TURNERS DELIGHT.pdf
Would you like to create a sanding ready surface on bowl forms, inside and out, superior to what a skew can do? Without the fear of catches? After all the waste is removed from the outside/inside of a bowl, hopefully the surface left for sanding is one where you will not need to pull out your piece of 60 grit-gravel-road and give the bowl a thorough going over in order to remove tear-out from either a dull tool or some sort of scraper that you were forced to use because nothing else seemed to answer the need. Many, many tools have been promoted as the ideal tool to achieve the ultimate surface on bowls, but the best one of the lot is the humble spindle gouge that almost every turner has on the shelf. It can provide the same surface as a skew, in some cases far better, and is one of the easiest tools to learn to use and to control.

0400. BURLS AND BARK POCKETS DELIGHT.pdf
Have you ever turned burl or other pieces that had a "flaw" or two? Have you avoided "imperfect" wood like the plague? Do you have pieces of wood you cannot use to make functional items due to a blemish? The answers to these problems are in this PDF article. After reading this article you may even seek out "flawed" pieces of wood from which to turn stunning one-of-a-kind items. Pieces finished like the one in the photo always fetch the highest prices in my booth at art/craft shows. This article will teach you a detailed step-by-step method of eliminating the negative and accentuating the positive. THE METHOD THAT I WILL TEACH YOU DOES NOT INVOLVE EPOXY OF ANY KIND. NO NEED TO SET YOUR WORK ASIDE, WAITING FOR THE FILL TO CURE; YOU CAN RESUME WORK WITHIN A MINUTE OF APPLICATION. YOU ARE THE ONE WHO DETERMINES THE COLOR. WITH THIS METHOD, YOU ARE IN COMPLETE CONTROL OF EVERYTHING RATHER THAN TRYING TO BEND YOURSELF AROUND SOMEONE ELSES PRODUCT.

0500. DRILLING DELIGHTS.pdf
Need to drill a lot of holes on the lathe? Tired of cranking the handwheel? Arm about ready to fall off? IN THIS ARTICLE, I will show you a short-cut to drilling on the lathe that not only saves your right arm but a lot of time as well. After this you will not need the handwheel to drill holes of less than two inches in diameter.

0600. DYEING DELIGHT.pdf
COLOR SELLS BETTER ! Most North American wood has bland colors. Even curly, burled, birdseye, and quilted wood, although dramatic, is still bland in color. As you can see in the photo of the stunning examples, there is a remedy that opens up a whole new world of endless possibilities for small and large pieces alike. Without fail, the dyed pieces in my booth always attract the most attention and fetch the highest prices. PLEASE DO NOT THINK THAT YOU CAN SIMPLY WIPE ON SOME DYE AND GET THE SAME KNOCKOUT RESULTS YOU SEE IN THE PHOTO. The technique is easy and this article will tell you how to follow the four steps to get the same results. The technique applies only to figured wood; plain wood is not really suitable.

0700. HUGE GOUGE DELIGHT.pdf
Every bowl turner runs into the same problem at about the same place when doing the inside of a bowl and that place is where the sides of the bowl transition into the bottom of the bowl. Typically, the turner is able to use a bowl gouge up to the transition zone but then runs out of room and needs to switch to a scraper or some other tool in order to finish cutting the inside profile. Typically, there is very little control of the cutting tool or the tool leaves a very poor finish with torn wood that needs to be sanded at length to get a reasonably smooth surface. IN THIS ARTICLE, I will teach you how to use a huge gouge [5/8" diameter or larger], sharpened as per my instructions, to surmount those difficulties and leave a tear-out-free surface. It makes turning the inside of a bowl a delight because of the surface it provides and the resulting dramatic decrease in sanding time.

0750. LIMING WAX DELIGHT.pdf
When using local wood to create an object of beauty, I often find that it needs that little something extra to raise it to the top of the podium. IN THIS ARTICLE, I will teach you step by step how to accent almost any piece quickly and easily to help set it apart from the crowd of other local [and sometimes, bland] turned pieces.

0800. LAMINATING PRESS DELIGHT.pdf
Make your own wood blanks to your own specifications using dimensional lumber (local and exotic). Almost all my wood for laminations comes straight off the saw into glue-up on the press. Sometimes a stack four or five layers high will be a bit wonky as a result but this press can compensate for that so that pressure is applied evenly to all surfaces. The laminating press I have used now for the last six or seven years is MODEL NUMBER 4. I have spent several thousands of dollars on trial and error, including a version with hydraulics. MODEL NUMBER 4 is low-tech [non-hydraulic and no clamps to buy or mess with], extremely easy to use and operate, easy to build, and relatively inexpensive. Makes laminating a speedy hassle-free delight.

0900. PARTING TOOL DELIGHT.pdf
One of the most misused woodturning tools is the parting tool. It is required in so many woodturning projects and thus the frequency of misuse is astronomical. The greatest culprits in propagating this misuse of the parting tool are all those manufacturers who have produced and continue to produce the diamond point parting tool. IN THIS ARTICLE, I will teach you how to deal with three styles of parting tools, the correct [and incorrect] way to use each one, and how to modify the grind so that they can become cutting tools instead of tearing tools.

1000. SANDING DELIGHT.pdf
One of the most difficult problems for a woodturner to overcome is tearout. With enough years of practice, tearout occurs less frequently but even then a scraper has to be used sometimes and often causes tearout. And in the meantime, while you are waiting to get good enough so you don't have tearout, how do you sand it quickly and easily so it is gone in no time? This article will teach you step by step how that can be done. After reading the article you will sand like you always have, almost. You will take advantage of a "trick of the trade" that has until now been closely guarded by myself and other woodturners who have been fortunate enough to have stumbled across the same "trick". There are no liquids of any kind used in this method.

1100. SCRAPER DELIGHT.pdf
Scrapers can be the reason many people become discouraged with woodturning due to all the sanding required after an incorrectly used scraper has mangled the wood fiber. But it need not be so. Scrapers, when correctly sharpened and used, can cut the wood leaving almost as good a surface as a gouge requiring minimal sanding. IN THIS ARTICLE, I will teach you when a scraper tears the wood and why. This will help you to avoid those problems. I will teach you step by step how to use a scraper correctly [and incorrectly] and how to sharpen it easily, correctly, and consistently for virtually tear-out-free turning.

1150. SHOP VAC DELIGHT.pdf
Shop vacs are marvelous machines that will do a terrific job for the individual who has an occasional bit of debris to pick up off the garage floor. But even the five-gallon vacuum is very limited in size for the average woodworker who does more than the occasional bit of mess-making. IN THIS ARTICLE, I will teach you how to modify your shop vac into a truly amazing 45-gallon capacity mess gatherer. This article will also show you how to put up an internal dust barrier so that the filter stays cleaner much longer thereby allowing freer airflow for extended periods of time.

1200. SPINDLE GOUGE DELIGHT.pdf
The skew chisel is responsible for more word-wind than any other tool in the turners repertoire. The most difficult chisel to master, it becomes a smug look of accomplishment for those who know how to use it and a sheepish avoidance of conversation for those who cannot. As if it were some rite of passage for woodturners. And yet, it is completely over-rated as a chisel. Having only a very limited range of application, the return to the woodturner for the effort it takes to master a skew chisel is very poor indeed. IN THIS ARTICLE, I will teach you in great detail how a modified spindle gouge, on the other hand, will leave just as good or better finished surfaces. It is very easy to learn how to use, to control [seldom if ever creates catches], and to sharpen. Its wide range of application allows it to put a finish-surface on 90% of turned wood articles including the outside and inside of bowls. This article does not deal with bowl turning. The companion article to this one does: BOWL TURNERS DELIGHT.pdf

1300. PROJECT: ACCENT BOWL.pdf
COLOR SELLS BETTER ! ? A terrific craft show/gallery item. ? Have you some small rather bland bowls? ? Want to jazz up your bowls? ? There is a lot of ?free? wood around, no matter where you live. Much of it can be turned. The problem is that most of the different species of wood found in the temperate zone is so bland in color that it all begins to look the same after a bit. IN THIS ARTICLE, I will teach you how add a slice of color to your small bowls which will make them really stand out and be much more saleable than if they are left plain. The bit of extra work is repaid many times over by the response of the buying public.

1600. PROJECT-BOWL STORY.pdf
This article is the creation story of a bowl. I describe the chainsawing, the bandsawing, the roughing, the drying, the finishing, and the buffing of a western maple burl bowl. At every stage in the life story of this bowl I describe the operations that are necessary, why they are necessary, and provide hints and tips learned in roughing and finishing bowls since 1981, the last 15 years of which have been as a fulltime turner. An excellent overview of what it takes to make a bowl from its incetption to its completion.

1650. PROJECT: BRACELETS.pdf
Bracelets turned from one piece of wood are very seldom interesting enough or colorful enough all the way around to warrant being purchased readily. By definition, a bracelet turned out of one piece of wood will also have two sections composed of end grain, which will be very weak and susceptible to breaking. Laminated bracelets, on the other hand, allow infinite design variations by using different woods in different combinations of color and thickness. Laminated bracelets have the same strength at every point due to the layering technique used in building them.

1700. PROJECT: BUD VASE LAMINATED.pdf
A perennial favourite at craft shows and gift galleries. I have been making bud vases since 1981 and thought long ago that I would soon run out of demand for them. Yet, they are the bill-payers at shows and a good income from gift galleries to this very day. And the best part of all is that most of my wood is local firewood. Bud vases are usually one of the first things a beginning turner is asked to make because on the one hand they are so simple, fast, and easy to do, and yet, on the other hand they are extremely difficult to do well. In this article, I will show you my version from turning blank to saleable item and everything in between. A crucial element is design which is addressed at some length.

1900. PROJECT: BURL MINI-VASES.pdf
There is a definite market at craft shows and gift galleries for well-made, well-designed miniatures. And you probably have interesting cut-offs in your shop or some pieces of figured firewood in the pile alongside the house. Every branch/tree trunk junction in every hardwood species has crotch figure: maybe not much but enough for a mini-vase. Dyeing the figured wood for maximum impact is a separate PDF.

2000. PROJECT: CANDLE HOLDER MULTI-CENTER.pdf
The technique of using multiple centers can be put to good effect in projects like candleholders or other pedestal-type turnings. No additional jigs need be purchased or made to accomplish this type of work. Multiple centers in the same turning give a whole new dimension to design by moving away from the straight up-and-down structure of traditional between-centers-turning. IN THIS ARTICLE, I teach you how to go from a square blank to the finished end product with detailed photos and instructions. Design considerations are dealt with at some length. So are the problems of turning two identical pieces.

2100. PROJECT: CANDLE HOLDER QUATRO.pdf
A unique, completely original concept in candleholder design that I have developed over the last several years. And they sell very nicely, since they are so new and different. The entire candleholder is lathe turned - no carving off the lathe is required at all. Glue is not used at any point in the process. Perfectly matching sets are produced with no requirement to try to match one to the other; very few measurements are required to be made. With the method I show you, two sets of matching candle holders are made at one time. I complete a set in under an hour and I'm not particularly fast.

2200. PROJECT: CANISTER LAMINATED.pdf
With this concept you will be able to make canisters and other containers up to the maximum capacity of your lathe without the need to find a tree that large or to do any hollowing. Dimensional lumber is the raw material, which will allow a very wide range of timbers to be used. Design possibilities are virtually endless: the largest piece I have done to date was a vase form 48" tall and 12" in diameter. All of the work is done on the lathe; a table saw is not used at all but a band saw will be helpful.

2300. PROJECT: CANISTER ONE PIECE.pdf
Make a beautiful tea box or other large dry-goods containor. This article will teach you in minute detail, from start to finish, how to make a canister out of one piece of wood. The only limit is the size of wood readily available to you. If you have strong grained wood, the grain lines will run from the body through the gap into the lid. No "hollow turning" is required. Roughed out, figured maple canisters of various sizes are available for purchase. Enqire.

2400. PROJECT: COMBO GRINDER 8.pdf
Pepper grinders galore abound on the market. Most of them have very cheap mechanisms that last only a short time. Most of them are made out of rather bland wood, which is either painted or stained. This unique grinder uses not only a top quality mechanism but also incorporates a salt shaker. In this article I will teach you how to start with a blank square and take you through every step to the finished grinder. I will help you avoid some of the pitfalls in turning grinders so that you come up with a beautiful finished grinder the very first time. Laminating the blank is a separate article.

2500. PROJECT: COMBO GRINDER 18.pdf
This pepper grinder is at the upper end of the grinder market. Because it is laminated, this grinder is composed of many natural wood colors and, because of the way it is cut, filled with myriad patterns not found in other one-piece grinders. In this article I will teach you how to start with a blank and take you through all the steps required to achieve, the very first time, success in making a combination pepper grinder/salt shaker helping you to avoid some of the pitfalls inherent in turning grinders. Laminating the blanks is a separate article.

2600. PROJECT: COMPUTER BRUSH.pdf*
A terrific craft show item! I have made and sold more than 1000 of these brushes in the last three years. THE ideal gift for the computer owner so that they can brush their computer daily as lovingly as they do their teeth. The genuine boar bristles, from the USA, are guaranteed to be static free. This makes the brushes ideal for thousands of uses from cleaning cameras to dashboards to sewing machines, to venetian blinds, and on and on. In this article I will teach you how to start with a piece of wood and take you through all the steps necessary to make the completed brush including an innovative drive for turning the handles. Laminating blanks is a separate article.

2650. CROSS GRAIN HOLLOW FORM.pdf
This article will teach you all of the many small steps involved in producing a dramatic hollow form or other similar turning. It is a cross grain hollow form because the pith is turned intact so that it displays on two sides. This allows you to use the entire log section without eliminating the pith from the blank. The result is especially dramatic with species that have a sharp sapwood/heartwood contrast, species such as box-elder with lots of red, or in spalted wood. The article includes sections on selection of wood, laying out the blank for maximum effect, roughing out the form, drying the form, and finishing it once it is dry. Turning tips are included as are design suggestions. The article covers everything you need to know from the raw log to gallery ready finish.

2700. PROJECT: FINGER SPINNERS.pdf
COLOR SELLS BETTER! These finger spinners are a spin-off from the ones Bonny Klein is known for. However, these are made from one piece of wood. I have made more than 8000 of these and sold them in craft shows and galleries. Terrific craft show item: the kids love them, and so do the grandparents. In this article I will teach you all the steps necessary to make colorful spinners very quickly and efficiently including the necessary tool techniques.

2800. PROJECT: FOUNTAIN PEN. pdf*
Although there are many articles available on how to turn pens, this one is a bit different in that it uses only some of the hardware for making a fountain pen and modifies the rest in order to create what I believe to be a much more elegant look in a fountain pen. The end of the fountain pen is a blind end rather than a straight tube with hardwar to finish it off. IN THIS ARTICLE, I will teach you all the procedures necessary, including information about the special chucks, required for you to make the same type of distinctive pen.

2850. PROJECT: HARLEQUIN HOLLOW FORM.pdf
With all the different species of domestic trees we have available we are yet drawn to the exotics, especially those whose wood displays bright colors. Colors, especially unusual ones or unusual combinations of colors, grab our attention. In the marketplace, one of the foundations of advertising is that color sells. Period. Full stop. IN THIS ARTICLE, I will teach you how to design, assemble, turn, and finish a harlequin hollow form.

2900. PROJECT: HUGE SANDING DRUM.pdf
Sometimes we forget that we are turners and that we can build many of the accessories for our lathes ourselves. A huge sanding drum is a case in point. Not only can we build it to suit our particular needs but we can save a lot of money as well. And we can tremendously increase the utility of our lathe. In this article I will teach you, step-by-step, how to build yourself a 15" diameter sanding drum to suit your lathe. The only thing you will need to purchase are sanding belts since all the other materials are probably readily availabe in your shop.

3000. PROJECT: LAMINATED ROLLING PIN.pdf
These rolling pins are at the high end of the rolling pin market. Although completely functional, they are intended to be hung for display in the best kitchens. The Cadillac of rolling pins, not only highly decorative but completely functional as well. For the gourment cook, an accent to decorate the best of kitchens, or simply an elegant gift for that special someone. IN THIS ARTICLE I will teach you the best-method-results of 25 years of woodturning experience, some of which has been the making of close to 400 pins. Each pin contains 7 or 8 different wood species. Hangers are in a different PDF. Laminating press is in a different PDF.

3100. PROJECT: LARGE HOLLOW FORMS.pdf
HOLLOW FORMS, or blind-turned forms as they are sometimes known, have built into the making of them a handicap: the turner cannot see what the chisel is doing when hollowing out the inside. The cutting proceeds by gosh and by golly, by the sound of the chisel as it cuts, and with the aid of various measuring instruments. With large hollow forms, the problem is compounded by the fact that the chisel must protrude over the tool rest so far that control of the cutting edge becomes a factor limiting, for most of us, the size of the piece we are able to attempt. This article shows a way around that by somewhat redefining the meaning of what a hollow form is and by taking a different approach. IN THIS ARTICLE I will teach you all the necessary procedures in making large hollow forms out of a single piece of wood using a simplified technique that will greatly reduce the problems of chisel overhang and allow you to make far more easily larger hollow forms than you ever thought possible on your lathe.

3200. PROJECT: LARGE PLATTERS.pdf
A platter is larger than a plate although it looks very much like one. Platters can be hung on the wall as decorative objects if they are outstanding in some aspects such a wood grain or design. Platters can also be functional in serving food or as a fruit bowl or cheese tray. IN THIS ARTICLE I will teach you all the necessary procedures required to successfully turn large platters starting with a rough blank and finishing with a 16" diameter platter worthy of being hung on any wall. Various design options, special tool grinds, and best chisel techniques are discussed as well as oil finishing.

Sometimes we forget that we are woodturners and purchase a tool that we can easily make ourselves. That is the case with a sanding disc; a very useful tool indeed to have in the shop. Especially when it can be made on the lathe and then run on it to do the sanding. IN THIS ARTICLE I will teach you all the steps it takes to make your own sanding disc from readily available materials in your shop so that the cost is minimal. It will do as good a job, or better, than an accessory you can purchase.

3400. PROJECT: LITTLE DIPPERS.pdf
Small dippers, completely lathe turned, are intriguiging to the uninitiated. Small dippers are handy in the kitchen as coffee measures, salt spoons, sugar spoons, among many other uses. A great craft show item. IN THIS ARTICLE, I will teach you all the steps necessary to make 100% lathe turned little dippers through an unorthodox method of mounting the blanks on the lathe. Small pieces of wood too nice to be thrown away are great for making little dippers.

3500. PROJECT: NEEDLE CASE.pdf
Needle cases have been around for as long as sewing needles and the need to carry them safely. This modern version has hardware that is solid brass with gold plating to prevent tarnishing. Usually, you would turn the wood around the brass findings such that the brass shows on both ends of the wood. This is very limiting because you are restricted to putting a straigh piece of wood between two bass pieces. IN THIS ARTICLE, I will teach you how to make a needle case that has the brass fitting on only one end making for a much better design and more elegant appearance. A special chuck, which can be made by the local machine shop, is discussed at some length.

3550. PROJECT: PICTURE FRAMES.pdf
Picture frames without end in design, color, shape, material, and size abound in the marketplace. Round wooden frames made out of one piece of solid wood are about as scarce as hens? teeth. Whether as a gift or as an attractive money-making craft item, picture frames turned completely on the lathe are a sure-fire winner. The picture is protected but not by glass. IN THIS ARTICLE, I will teach you how to start with a rough piece of wood and take you all the way to hanging the finished and framed photograph.

3600. PROJECT: POT MAKER.pdf*
Here is a gift that any gardener will cherish. It allows you to make seed pots out of strips of newspaper at no cost. Once the seedlings are ready to transplant, the entire pot is placed in the ground. The newspaper pot will simply bio-degrade. The pot maker is easy to turn with standard tools out of any readily available wood and is extremely popular with the gardening crowd. IN THIS ARTICLE, I will show you all the steps necessary to turn a pot maker in about 15 minutes, with a complete discussion of all the chucks and jigs required.

3700. PROJECT: PULL TOP SPINNER.pdf
A pull-top spinning top is very popular with all ages because it is so easy to opertate due to the handle and string that is required for each one. It evokes childhood memories for so many people because of the popularity of the tops. These tops spin extremely well due to the fine balance since the entire spinner is turned in one go on the lathe. Because they are not mass produced, design variations and woods used make these high-end collector items. Glueing up the blank for the spinner allows unlimited design potential. Many different shapes and sizes and wood types are possible for the spinner itself. IN THIS ARTICLE, I will teach you step-by-step how to start with a block of wood and finish with a beautifully balanced pull-top. I also show you how to make a classy handle using the lathe and the router.

3800. PROJECT: REINDEER NATIVITY.pdf*
If you have always wanted to be carver but are, like me, all thumbs when it comes to 3-dimensional rendering, then this is an ideal project for you. Two patterns come with this PDF one for the front view and one for the side view. All you have to do is cut out the patterns and trace one on the front and the other on the side of the same piece of wood. A bandsaw capable of carrying a narrow blade is essential for cutting out the reindeer. The patterns can be sized larger or smaller thereby creating a "family" or "nativity scene". IN THIS ARTICLE, I will show you in detail all the steps necessary to change a block of wood into a finished reindeer including all sanding and finishing details.

3900. PROJECT: ROLLING PIN HANGER.pdf*
Rolling pins are difficult to store in drawers and even more difficult to extricate when needed. Why not hang the pins on the wall or cupboard and make them a decorative accent in the kitchen? This way the pin is always at hand. IN THIS ARTICLE, I will teach all the steps required to make a rolling pin hanger that is both functional and decorative. The lathe is not used in this project but a drill press, a sander, and a router are.

4000. PROJECT: BURL S&P SHAKERS.pdf
Instructions on how to turn something as basic as S&P shakers you say? Yes. I have turned and sold thousands of S&P shakers, not only out of burl but many other woods as well. For figured/exotic wood, the price point can be quite high but most of the time the price point is low and this means that you have to be able to knock out a set in a very short time to make money at it. IN THIS ARTICLE, I will show you the short-cuts and time-savers I have incorporated over the years in making these money earners. BURL S & P BLANKS ARE AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE.

4050. PROJECT: SATURN BOWLS.pdf
So called due to the round shape of the bowl and the very wide rim around it. This project lends itself very nicely to highly colored or dramatically grained wood, especially exotics, so many of which are not available in thicknesses greater than two inches. Diameter is not a factor, within reason and good taste, since a formula is given within this article that will allow you to come up with the perfect proportions in each case. Step by step instructions will take you from the rough blank all the way through to completion using only best-practices methods to achieve the perfectly executed Saturn Bowl. This project assumes that the wood is dry and that the roughing/drying cycle will not be required.

4100. PROJECT: SOLITAIRE GAME BOARD.pdf*
The solitary game dealt with in this article is at least 150 years old, has been played in many different formats with many different kinds of pieces, and under many different names. Yet, it still remains popular today due to the simplicity of the game itself, which is very difficult and challenging to master. I have sold thousands and thousands of these 9" diameter games at craft shows. IN THIS ARTICLE, I will teach you how to make the board entirely on the lathe after the blank is sawed round. Included are techniques for mounting the board quickly and easily on the lathe so that the entire face, front and back, are accesible; how to cut the marble storage tray around the circumference; special bits and methods for drilling the round-bottom holes; and finishing techniques so yours can look the same as mine.

4200. PROJECT: SPIRAL HOLLOW FORM.pdf
With all the different species of domestic trees we have available we are yet drawn to the exotics, especially those whose wood displays bright colors. Colors, especially unusual ones or unusual combinations of colors, grab our attention. In the marketplace, one of the foundations of advertising is that color sells. Period. Full stop. IN THIS ARTICLE, I will teach you how to take a hollow form from inception to completion, including: laminating, bandsawing, designing the blank, shaping the outside profile, hollowing the inside, applying a finish, and all the tools used in the process.

4250. PROJECT: STOPPER VASES.pdf
Having, since 1992, turned more than 5000 bottle stoppers and laminated over 8000 stopper blanks, it occurred to me that the tops of the bottle stoppers had an uncanny resemblance to a classic vase shape. The reason that the bottle stopper blanks have the shape they do is that this displays to the best advantage the colors of the various woods used in the lamination. Having attained all of my bottle stopper turning ambitions, I started to refine the vase shape in order that they might stand on their own merits, provide me with another use for bottle stopper blanks, and also become another craft show item. Laminated blanks, whether for stoppers or vases, are for sale. Enquire.

4300. PROJECT: TEA LIGHT HOLDER.pdf*
Tealights and candles are always popular items at craft shows. Well designed handcrafted holders are not so common, however. IN THIS ARTICLE, I will teach you how to make holders that are reversible so that a tealight can be held on one side and a taper on the other. The holders are less than 2" high and 4 to 5 inches in diameter making them ideal candidates for using up cut-offs and scraps or some form of lamination. Dyeing highly figured wood is a separate PDF.

4400. PROJECT: NON-ROLLING TOOL HANDLES.pdf
There are few things more aggravating than having just spent time carefully sharpening a turning tool to have it roll off the lathe or the bench and strike the concrete floor edge foremost [how else would it ever strike the floor?]. Time to do something about that. Now! IN THIS ARTICLE, I will take you step by step through turning your own non-rolling tool handle from start to finish. I will also show you how, with a few minutes, you can modify all your factory made handles so they will forevermore be unrollable.

4500. PROJECT: TOOTHPICK KEYFOB.pdf
A very popular craft show item! These have been a consistent seller for me for 15 years. The perfect answer for the person who is always looking for a toothpick. With this little containor, the toothpicks are always with the keys. Or anything else you might want to carry in the containor. The solid brass, gold plated findings have been customized from others available on the market so that one end is wood and the other end is a screw-top. This looks a lot better than having a piece of wood between two pieces of brass. The more brighly colored the wood, the better they sell. How to laminate for maximum color impact is a separate PDF.

4600. PROJECT: TRADDITIONAL ROLLING PIN.pdf
Every kitchen needs one, hundreds of suppliers carry them, and yet it is amazing how popular these handcrafted rolling pins are at craft shows and in gift galleries. Many local woods are suitable for making rolling pins and are often preferred over exotic woods. All of my pins come with a hundred year guarantee. IN THIS ARTICLE, I will teach you how to turn a tradditional rolling pin with fixed handles, out of one piece of wood, from start to finish. I will show you how to get the handles to match, how to get the barrel parallel, how to deal with the pips at the end of the handles, and how to put on a lasting oil finish. A rolling pin takes me less than 20 minutes to turn. Instructions for the hanger are in a separate PDF.

4700. PROJECT: TURNING EGGS.pdf
Turning eggs is one of the most challenging projects I have ever attempted. Eggs are so simple in shape and yet all the elements of the shape must be correct in relation to each other in order to have the final product look like a real egg. Not just SIMILAR to an egg but LIKE an egg is what separates the men from the boys. IN THIS ARTICLE, I will teach you how to turn an egg that looks LIKE an egg by showing you how to make a template, how to use the tools properly, how to best cut the wood, how to make a special simple but very effective jig for holding the eggs in order to do the final shaping of the ends.

4800. PROJECT: TURNTABLES.pdf
A large, beautifully figured piece of wood nicely sanded and finished placed in the middle of a table and holding assorted condiment containers, can add a great deal to the setting and ambience of that kitchen. IN THIS ARTICLE, I will teach you how to select for a beautifully figured piece of wood and suggest options if that is not available, how to turn that large piece with minimum effort and wood tear-out, how to achieve a flat surface on the top of the turntable, and how easiest to plan the lay-out of the turntable so that assembly is a breeze.

4900. PROJECT: WOODFLOWERS.pdf
Woodflowers are decorative pieces turned from almost any green branch or sapling. They can be quite short, small, and delicate or quite tall and robust looking. The taller the flower and the thinner the stem, the more of a brag piece it becomes. These woodflowers can be displayed/sold individually or grouped into an arrangement. Every single step is explained and illustrated providing the best-practices method of turning woodflowers. The explanation for a jig to turn 12" tall flowers is included.
